Dr. Thibaut Raboin (local ecologist)

Abstract: Queer ecologies

This talk will present some of the key ways in which ecology has been thought in relation to queer experience and queer life in recent writing. Focusing on different ecosystems (cities, wastelands, forests, beaches etc.), including our very own Epping Forest, we will see how writers, filmmakers and artists have made a case for a specifically queer way of thinking about ecology and the environment. Doing so, we will question the division between what is “natural” and “unnatural”; we will look lovingly at the weeds we usually trample on; and we will discuss the possibility of a queer utopia.

Bio:

Thibaut Raboin is a lecturer at the School of European Languages, Culture and Society at University College London, where he teaches queer theory and cultural studies. He is the author of Discourses on LGBT asylum in the UK (Manchester University press, 2016) and has published on topics including queer migration, deindustrialisation, noir novels and queer ecology.
